Kinesiology Tape: Wear Time, Showering, Removal and Why It Lifts

August 24, 2026 4 min read

Most problems people have with kinesiology tape are not about the technique at all — the tape lifts at a corner, or it comes off in the shower on day one, or it stings coming off. Nearly all of it comes down to a handful of habits before and after application. This covers how long to keep tape on, whether it survives water, how to take it off, and what to do when it will not stay put.

How long can you wear kinesiology tape?

A well-applied strip will usually stay put for several days. Proworks tape is water resistant and breathable, so normal showering and training do not automatically end it.

The limit is your skin rather than the adhesive. Take the tape off if the skin underneath becomes itchy, red or sore, and give the area a rest before taping again. There is no benefit to leaving a strip on past the point where it has started lifting at the edges — once it is peeling it is not doing anything except catching on clothing.

Can kinesiology tape get wet?

Yes. Proworks kinesiology tape is water resistant — it handles showering, sweat and rain. It is not waterproof, and it is not designed for long submersion.

Showering with it on

  • Give a fresh application twenty to thirty minutes before it gets wet. The adhesive is pressure and heat activated and needs that time to set.
  • Do not scrub the tape or aim the shower directly at an edge.
  • Afterwards, pat it dry with a towel rather than rubbing. Do not use a hairdryer on it.

Swimming

Extended time in water will shorten how long a strip lasts, particularly at the ends. If you swim regularly, expect to reapply more often.

Preparing the skin — the part that decides everything

The adhesive grips skin, not moisturiser. Before you apply:

  • Clean and dry. No lotion, oil, sunscreen or moisturiser on the area.
  • Consider the hair. Very hairy areas hold less well and hurt more on removal. Trimming with clippers works better than shaving, which leaves the skin more sensitive.
  • Not straight after a shower. Warm, damp skin is the worst time to apply. Let it cool and dry properly first.
  • Do not touch the adhesive. Handle strips by the backing paper. Skin oil from your fingers is a common reason a strip never grips.

Why kinesiology tape peels off — and how to stop it

Rounding the corners of a kinesiology tape strip with scissors

In rough order of how often each one is the culprit:

  1. Square corners. A sharp corner catches on a sock, a sleeve or bedding, and once one corner lifts the strip unzips. Round every corner — it takes five seconds and it is the single biggest fix.
  2. Too much stretch. Tension pulls the strip back towards its resting length and drags the anchors up with it. The two ends go down with no stretch at all; only the middle carries any.
  3. Product on the skin. Moisturiser, oil or sunscreen underneath.
  4. Not rubbing it in. Run your hand firmly along the strip a few times after applying. The warmth activates the adhesive.
  5. Taping a tensed limb. Apply with the area in the position described in the guide for that body part, not braced or clenched.

If an edge has already lifted

Trim the loose piece off with scissors rather than pressing it back down — it will not re-stick, and a trimmed edge stops the lifting spreading.

How to remove kinesiology tape

Slowly, and in the direction of hair growth. Pulling tape off quickly, or against the hair, is what causes most of the irritation people blame on the adhesive.

  • Warm, damp skin helps — the end of a shower is a good moment.
  • Push the skin away from the tape with your other hand rather than pulling the tape away from the skin.
  • Peel back on itself, flat and close to the skin, not upwards at an angle.
  • Baby oil or a little olive oil worked into the edge will loosen a stubborn strip.

Afterwards, leave the skin bare for a while before taping the same area again.

Storing tape and cutting ahead

Rolling out a length of Proworks kinesiology tape

Keep the roll somewhere cool and dry and away from direct sun. Heat is what makes a roll go tacky and difficult to unwind.

Cutting strips in advance is genuinely easier than cutting mid-application. Leave the backing paper on, keep them flat, and they will be fine for days.

Common questions

Can I reuse a strip?

No. Once it is off, it is done.

Can I put a new strip straight over the same area?

Give the skin a break first, especially if it looks pink. Repeated taping of the same patch without a rest is the usual cause of irritation.

Is it safe on sensitive skin?

Proworks tape is latex free. If you know your skin reacts to adhesives, apply a small test piece somewhere discreet and leave it for a day before taping a large area. Do not apply to broken, irritated or infected skin.

Does the colour affect anything?

No. All fourteen Proworks colours are the same tape.

Is Proworks tape pre-cut?

No — it is an uncut 5 metre roll, 5cm wide, so you cut to whatever length you need. Here is how.

Application guides

This tape is a support product, not medical advice. If your pain is severe, followed an injury, or is not settling, speak to a qualified healthcare professional. Do not apply tape to broken, irritated or infected skin.
